If you feel you have True control of your car, and feel you can control it in snow. Do this...

It was a very wide road, covered in snow, with nobody around [:D]
Drew a picture, so I do not have to explain it.

By the way, it was a LOT of fun [:)]

ms paint at its best.

i just had to run over to the warehouse at work, and i whipped around in the parking lot for a good 10 minutes. i tried to get it so i could have my car stop in a certain position. it'd be fun to set up cones and try the Elwood Blues park job a few times.

When you don't want to 'drift'....?

You bring up a question I have - how driveable will my new M3 be in bad weather? Do winter tires make it reasonably useable? I will be trading my AWD Audi S4 with 4 winter tires, but I want to be able to go in the snow. I don't mind a fun fling or two, but not those nasty unplanned ones in heavy traffic....

I'm not sure, What part of pa do you live in? I'm in lancaster county, so if you're nearby i feel your pain with the weather.

I would DEFINITELY get snow tires on a new set of wheels. Getting moving is not easy, driving on a straight or even slightly curved road isnt too bad, I havent lost control yet, and getting stopped is simple, i can probably stop in a shorter distance than an SUV.

I would say try to find some cheap older subaru or audi that is all wheel drive just for snow and rain. Maybe even an older 325ix?

franko, you definitely shouldn't stick with the stock M3 tires for the winter if you plan to drive the car in the snow. One time, during a snow storm here in NJ, this M3 Convertible with the 19" wheel option was stuck on a part of my street where it is a mild incline. I have Michelin Pilot Sport tires on my car and they have really been awful this whole winter. In cold weather, these summer tires just don't warm up, so their traction is poor even when it's dry! I am located in Chester co PA. I will have to figure out how wheels and tire strategies work on the E46 m3. My car will be available in a week or two, and includes the stock 18 inch wheels and run flat tires on the new car. I think it is too late to get winter wheels and tires, but by next year I want to have separate sets optimized for summer and winter use. What I have to do is figure is what to do with the brand new wheels and tires (keep or sell them), what to use for summer wheels and tires and what to use for winter wheels and tires. I am sure others have thought this through, so I will have to search the boards and see what I can find. Let me know your thoughts, too!

I've learned that on my Z4 the BS Potenza's are hard rubber All-Season stock tires and they have absolutely no traction what’s so ever. If you are going to drive it in snow, you have to have winter tires.

winter tires is a must for every car that is driven in winter conditions. even AWD! AWD can´t gain back traction when the rubber lost it...and that good contact needs special tires. easy as that.

with winter tires your M3 should be fine. don´t race it like crazy and drive appropriatly. ABS, ESP etc. do a fine job to keep you on the road and make it safe.
