I just got a great deal on a 93 318is that has had a very rough life and would just like to get some input from some long time bmw owners.

Here is the story.

The car was owned by a girl that doesn't even deserve to own a Drivers Liscence, much less a car, especially a BMW.

-The front bumper has been pushed in about an inch on the drivers side, same thing for the rear. except its the passenger side.

-fog lights are destroyed

-The hood has some dings in the middle

-The fan shroud is held on by duct tape, as well as the center overhead console.

-The headlights only work in flash to pass

-drivers door doesn't quite shut right

-both doorpanels are screwed up(coupe)

-passenger window is broke out

-rear view mirror is in the rear seat along with a chunk of the windshield

-speedometer doesn't work

-spare is not exactly round anymore, and one of the factory 15's are even worse

SO the only thing I was told about was the vibration and the passenger window.

GOOD NEWS, I paid 1300 for it

We leave kentucky after driving 4 hours to get there(and 1 speeding ticket)

The thing wouldn't go over 35 without SEVERE shaking. We pulled over, tried a towstrap, and it still shook, so that isolated the vibration down to the rear half of the driveline

We jacked it up and put it in gear, vibration still there, cv shafts and wheels were not causing it, so it led me to the drive shaft or possibly something internal to the tranny, my friend got in and gunned it, something must have snapped back into position and god must have figured I needed a break cause the vibration stopped and we drove the whole way back 200 miles without incident, until Indianas finest f**ked me with a expired tag ticket for 115.00

I'm a mechanic/ex navy electronics tech and am not to worried about the electrical issues or to much of the mechanical issues, but could use some advice on places to find quality parts for less than dealership prices.

I'll need a radiator shroud, passneger exterior doorhandle, and some misc interior parts

Any advice/questions are welcome, thanks in advance

You paid $1300 for it, but you're not done paying for it yet... not even close. This is how I got my first 325e. Basically a bucket of bolt for free (free!) but man, I put thousands into it, and it was always just a game of "catch up" with the repairs. But you'll love it!! When you're done with that thing, you'll be a BMW certified engineer, and you'll be telling us what vibrates! Have fun! It'll be a great parts car when it dies! [cheers]

See if you can post some pics... I'd love to see her!

Congrats, long road ahead but your'll learn a lot! Since I have a 318i I'll probably be asking you for advice in the future! I did the same thing with an '83 Z28 and it was a great experience. My only mistake was doing it with a Z28 instead of a Bimmer. Now I'm a chevy expert who drives a BMW. Oh well, Johnny Damon went to NY......

Parts Sources

I really like Bavarian Automotive. Another source to consider is importautoservice.com. Leon has been doing this about 30 years and has a good supply of OEM or better parts. He's forgotten more about BMW's than most of us will ever know.
