Finally fixed that damn rattling under my car...

#1
Turns out it was the heatshield around the exhaust. I got the car up on some blocks today to change the oil, filters, fluids, etc and also to take a look at what has been rattling under there all this time. The heatshield had rotted itsself loose from the 2 bolts all the way in the back. I was able to drill out the rusted bolts and put in some new ones with really big washers and now its sounds great. It was soooo embarrasing to be idling and hearing this terrible sound under my car.

Yea, I feel you, my wifes car had the same problem after replacing the starter....it is a wonder what vibration and a few bolts can do, glad you got it fixed. My wifes car drove me nuts till I fixed the heat shield. Her starter had a loose heat shield....did the same thing as the exhaust heat shield. Drove me NUTS!!!

Yeah, those same two bolts came loose on my heatshield. I thought I had a bad cat system so I got them replaced, while I was at it I fixed the heatshield. Now I'm beginning to think it was just the heatshild. I'm such a dope.

I get a rattling sound whenever I go over bumps, vibrations in the road, speed bumps, etc. I only hear it when I roll my window down and at low speed b/c of the noise factor but I assume it's always present. It sounds like some pebbles in a tin can under there... does it sound like it may be the heat shield for me too? Thanks guys--

Mike, what you are describing really sounds like your hand brake. To quickly test it out stop the car, put the hand brake all the way on, put the car in first gear and slightly release the clutch, just enough to make that car roll a little if you didn't have the hand brake on. If the car doesn't go anywhere at all and it feels like the rear of the car rose up higher, your hand brake should be fine. If only one side of the rear felt like it rose up, then the hand brake on the opposite side (the side that stayed down) is loose. You can easily adjust that inside the car with a couple of wrenches or even just your hands.
Good luck.

Well I did the parking break test and it wasn't that. I'll take a look underneath tomorrow for anything that's visually loose... any suggestions?
Thanks--

Except for the heat shield that has been already mentioned, I can't really think of anything that can rattle underneath the car. Sorry.

Me Too

I have my cats off right now and have a funny rattle that drives me nuts. I think mine is the heat shields around the cats themselves. I am going to safety wire them in place to keep them from rattling.

On a side note, I am probably about to start a thread about the cats. (Unless I find one that I think will answer my question.)

There is a heat shield around the pipe at the oxygen sensor. This rotted and rattled on my '94. I took it off when I put on the UUC catback. No more rattles.
