Well, I thought I would vent to you all for a little moral support.

Went out to my car this morning and someone "keyed" the crap out of my car. My new hardtop, hood, trunk, both sides of the car are deeply scratched. What kind of low-life does that to a persons car???? The police say there have been about a dozen cars vandalized in that area in the last few months. I am PISSED!!!!

Anyway, insurance is covering it after I pay my deductible. What can I expect a decent paint job to cost? I think the whole car will need to be painted, but will the insurance company be cheap and not allow this? What a way to start the day... [mad]

Wow, sorry to here this. There are some who don't respect others property or feelings. This is so sad. Just believe that the time will come that it will come back to them. Just that hope once you get it repaired you can keep if from happening again. Good luck with it all....

I feel for you man. That really sucks. I remember the first time my car got key; I was flipping out. (I have a-hole neighbors; who tell me to my face that they do it!?!) My experience hopefully isn't as bad as your; from what the paint shop told me, as long as the key marks do not penetrate to the bear metal it won't be more than a regular paint job. (A good one with primer and stripping will cost $1000-$2000.) Mine penetrated the metal and they had the take all the paint off and then fix the body metal...that's pricey. I ended up not fixing it cause it was too much. Good luck man, and I'm sorry to hear that. It really breaks my heart to hear of ignorant people.

Yes, sorry to hear about your car. The evil doers are usually bored early to late teens with no parenting supervision, out late, using drugs and alcohol. I agree with Tom, a quality paint job, had one done on my pickup five years ago, and then it cost me two thousand with me buying all the material and having a personal friend do the work. Three to five grand sounds right.

For stripping and repainting, I'd err more on the side of $5000 than $3000. $1000-$2000 is too low - that will get you a basecoat/clearcoat paintjob at Maaco. For someone with skill to repaint the car and have it last (that's the big thing - people can make a paintjob look good right after it is done for $2000, but it won't last more than 5 years), it should cost around $5000.

Above all else, do not take it someplace that isn't planning on removing all of the exterior trim - masking off emblems and trim is the sign of a cheap paintjob that will not last.

Yeah, I'm also sorry to hear about what happened. I know how you feel - someone keyed every body panel on my Camaro a few years back. My insurance paid for a good portion of the repaint, and I had the entire car repainted.

Thanks everyone, it is a sad day when you can't park your car outside for one night in a decent neighborhood. It is truly a weak and disturbed individual who would destroy someone's car-especially for no reason.

I have worked and saved to get a car I would enjoy, taken good care of her and this is how I am rewarded. Just wish I would have caught the bastard who did it.

Thanks for your thoughts--I really appreciate it!

If you would have caught the punk, you would be in jail right now etching days in the wall. Wow, sorry to hear about your misfortune. Hope you have full coverage on insurance cause it sure will take a pretty penny for a quality paint job. I feel for you and hope that you can settle with a decent agreement with your insurance.

I also agree with the higher prices quoted above. Under $2500 these days is not going to be real good for the long run. $3K to $4K will get you a decent quality multilayer with clearcoat paint job. Why? Lots of prep labor, paint can cost $100/gallon and more, and you need multiple prep and base coats plus clear coat.

The problem is that the insurance company may not want to pay out this kind of money. Depending on the year of your E36, a $3000 paint job could be 40% to 50% of the value of the car. Things like that make insurance companies squirmy.

Maybe I'm living in lala land, but my friend has a 1994 Chevy S10 and he had the whole thing painted, stripped, and all that stuff for $1800. And it wasn't just a base coat. It was a professional shop and they did an excellent job; it was spotty or anything; it looked great. They even did it two tone (gray top and red bottom). This was a shop that was way out in the rural part of MD though. I think it was in finksburg.

Just got my first quote, $3,700. Now I am going to get one from a place with a reputation as being a top-notch bmw paint place. Then the question will be how low the insurance company tries to go. Thanks for ewveryone's input!

alright, as it turns out my insurance company was pretty fair with me. I have roughly $4500 to get it done. I am scheduled for a full paint job in a couple of weeks--the car should look like new.

Thanks for all the input, I look forward to having my car back in good shape!
