I bought a 93 325is with 18" hamann rims. I have never driven an automatic e36 til this one. This is my question. Is it normal for the transmission with the A_M switch set to _A_ to relese the gear when its at 2000+ RPMS and drop to 1000? Then when I press the gas again it has to travel back to 2000+ rpms to Grip again. I dont know if this is normal, and i wonder if the size of the rims has anything to do with it, Maybe a new differential is what I need. Thanx for any comments.

Sounds to me that you may have a cracked torque converter. But, my problem was the trans took 4000 rpm to move the car, and when it reached enough speed it would shift. Once i got to 55-60 mph the rpms would drop as it should have in OD. Low end torque was the problem.

Nothing to do with rims or diff. Sounds like it *might* be a high stall speed torque converter that somebody installed? Although I don't know if they were ever available for the E36.

Thanx for the info, I never knew it could be the torque converter. Car also idles at 1100 rpm when the gas is released and the car is still moving no matter what speed it is going. And if I place the car in park or in nuetral it idles at about 700 rpm.

have you added any fluid to your trans?? if so you may have overfilled it... these tranny's are very particular about fluid levels it is a whole process to change your fluid to get it to the proper level when you have it done by the dealer. they do it by temp. i changed mine myself and i wouldn't shift right after... i took it back to the dealer an had them do it and it fixed the problem.
